a new passion

I come from a family of good cooks. My mom used to run a small catering business before she migrated to the US with my dad. My brother, aside from being a registered nurse, is also an excellent cook. He is the designated cook during family gatherings, birthdays, reunions and holidays. My sister in law can whip up half a dozen different dishes in less than 3 hours. My dad makes the best fried rice (complete with Chinese sausage, green peas and eggs) and beef steak one would die for. You wouldn’t believe it but even my 10 year old nephew, Inno can cook his own version of chicken and pork adobo without any help from his mom and dad.

Obviously, in my family, I am the odd man out. I remember back in college, they would assign the easiest of all – dessert! Because of this, I became famous for my mango float and tiramisu (at least to my family, my closest friends, in laws and eventually, their neighbors). My mom never grew tired of sending me cookbooks and her recipes. She never gave up hope that someday, I will learn how to love cooking. My brother texts me recipes of his new dishes and I would just save them in my drafts and forget about them. He too believed that I would cook someday.

It was just this month when I realized how fun cooking can be. A few weeks back when my parents were still in town, I just woke up one morning and decided that from now on, I will learn how to cook. You could just imagine the happiness on my mother’s face and not to mention the excitement of my husband. He got uber excited he’s gonna pay me for every dish I whip up. I have been learning since. And they are all so supportive of me. Mom’s right, I’m just not into cooking now. I am passionate about it.

Happy cooking!
